MPN weekly meetings

Weekly meetings are, for the time being at least, held every other Tuesday morning from 10:00am to 12:45pm.  Typical attendance is seven to ten people.  The meetings focus on developing an effective network and job-search strategy.  Each meeting we have a "Table Topic" or discussion  theme for about 30 minutes on a subject relating to the job search.  Table Topics have included how to effectively present your skills and experience, writing effective cover letters, interview tips, networking strategies, and presentation techniques.

Each meeting has three parts:

a) A short intro from each attendee — we’ll use the “3-floor elevator speech” rule of thumb.

b) A Table Topic covering a subject of current value to job seekers, such as How to Create a More Compelling LinkedIn profile or How to Use Social Media in Your Job Search.

c) A period for the structured exchange of job leads. Attendees must make every effort to offer up at least one job lead (if not more) for someone else who attends.

Meetings are facilitated by George Mercer an independent career coach and counselor with a background in marketing and corporate copywriting.  George has been facilitating these meetings for nearly 20 years.  Over 2,500 marketers (or thereabouts) have attended meetings since the inception of MPN.  Currently, there are approximately 500 active members.

Getting the Most Out of the MPN Meetings

Eighty percent of life is showing up!  It is recommended that you attend meetings on a regular basis.  We ask that you make every effort to be on time and stay until the end of the meeting.

Life Happens

If you must arrive late or leave early because of other commitments such a day care, interviews, etc., please let the facilitator know in advance of, or at the beginning of the meeting.

If there is a snowstorm, in most cases, there will still be a meeting.  However, if the weather is extremely bad and much of the city closes down, we will cancel the meeting.  In that case, you should receive an email by noon of the day of the meeting.  So be sure to check your email before going out in the cold!

Workshops

Workshops are occasionally held on Thursdays providing in-depth, training, exercises, and sharing of knowledge and experiences on one topic  Workshops, generally run from 10:00am to 1:00pm.  Subjects covered are often based on interests identified during the weekly meetings.  Examples of recent workshops include:

  • Writing and the Job Search: From Emails to Cover Letters to Thank You Letters - Using a Consultative Approach and the Best Elements of Style to Stand Out from the Pack
  • The Back Story: How to Discover the Real Story Behind the Company Before You Go in for the Interview
  • How to Prepare for a Successful Interview: What to Know... and What to Ask.
  • How to Best Present Your Accomplishments - PARs (Problem-Action-Result) Workshop

Soirees

MPN Soirees are a combination of a networking and social event that takes place several times a year.  MPN Soirees provide an opportunity for new and past members of MPN as well as their guests to network, and exchange ideas and pleasantries in a casual, social environment.  Many friendships and business relationships have had their beginnings at MPN meetings and events.

Soirees take place in the evening at a venue such as a nearby restaurant function room.  Most events will feature a guest speaker or panel.  Hors d’oeuvres are served and there is a cash bar for beverages.

Current and past MPN members are informed of upcoming events via email.  They are also posted on the MPN website calendar.
